This is an article about Rapa Nui better known by the European name of Easter Island. I have always wanted to go to Rapa Nui and managed to do it the last time I was coming home from Caracas, through Buenos Aires. The people of Rapa Nui have suffered the indignity of being the extreme example cited for an indigenous group who destroyed the fragile ecology of theier island home becuase they were welded to a bizarre culture and tradition. This myth ignores entirely the rapacious treatment of the islanders at the hands of pirates and colonial authorities over the last 300 years. This myth was perpetrated by Jared Diamond due to sloppy research and fitting the distortions of the facts to a theory. Even Marxists such as John Bellmay Foster have been deceived, understandably due to a lack of more reliable, alternative information.
